IBM’s Hip Benchmarks

leave a comment »

I am embarrassed to admit that I am one of the last people to adopt anything hip. It took me years to decide to buy my first pair of capris. Remember when those knit caps from Nepal became really popular a few years ago? I just got one. I also just bought my first pair of Ugg-like boots last month.

Luckily I have a cousin who is a designer in New York City or I would be a total loss.

Which is why I have a real appreciation for anything that is hip. And I realized that IBM has actually been very prescient these days with new hip benchmark results. Let’s take a look at a few:

  • For the new Java benchmark, SPECjEnterprise2010, IBM is #1.(1)
  • For the industry standard groundbreaking virtualization benchmark, SPECvirt_sc2010, IBM is #1.(2)
  • In terms of benchmarks that come under the industry umbrella, IBM just published an excellent result with the STAC financial securities benchmark.(3)
  • I did realize that there are a few times where I am actually an early style adopter — when I still have something from the 1970’s that comes back into style.

(1)SPECjEnterprise2010 result with WebSphere Application Server V7 on IBM Power 780 (64 cores, 8 chips) and DB2 9.7 on IBM Power 750 Express (32 cores, 4 chips) of 16,646.34 EjOPS.
    (2)SPECvirt_sc2010 result on x3850 X5, 5466 @ 336 VMs, Intel® Xeon® Processor X7560 (2.26GHz with 24MB L3 cache per
    processor—8 chips/64 cores/8 cores per chip), 2TB of memory, 576 73GB disk drives, Red Hat Enterprise Linux® 6, KVM.
Source: Results current as of 3/3/11.
